About the Work

Below are excerpts from the three principal sections of the concerto.  My intention is to expand these three sections to complete the concerto.  The finished composition will be somewhere between ten and twenty minutes in duration.

Why did I choose “Iridescence” as the title?  I began the concerto by composing the third section, which is slow, dreamy and chock-full of a vast array of tonal colors, including some rather unusual ones (such as the tam tam being scraped with a drumstick or superball).  Iridescence is defined as "a phenomenon where colors appear to change as the angle of view or illumination changes," and this work captures elements of that kaleidoscopic variety.

The concerto is conceived as a solo for euphonium and a standard orchestra, with a reduction for piano and percussion. When these are finished I will be making a version for solo euphonium and band.
