Romp
Romp began its life as a horn quartet, commissioned by Gary Scudder, band director of the Stockdale Christian School in Bakersfield, CA. Subsequently, Gary commissioned me to set Romp for band.
As a former horn player, I grew up playing old music for horn that was peppered with horn calls in fragments or in their entirety, derived from the European hunting tradition. I drew upon some of the common rhythms of these horn calls for Romp in a more modern setting. The band version begins with an optional introduction by the percussion section.
Romp was premiered at Carnegie Hall by Gary Scudder and the Stockdale Christian School Wind Ensemble in March of 2016.
